This book was written in 1927 and style of writing reflects the era in each the book was written. The book is written in dense prose with long paragraphs and sentences. It compiles information about Shakespeare's times, traditions, and as well as information known about Shakespeare. The book also includes metrical analysis of his works such as total number of lines, blank verses, run-on lines, and others. The tables show a lot of interesting fact about how Shakespeare's writing changes over his career, for example, in his early plays he used more rhymes but practically abandoned them by the end. This is a serious scholastic work and even though it is a little dry to read if you are interested in the topic there is a lot to learn.

The facts about Shakespeare William Allan Neilson Ashley Horace Thorndike 9781177593335 Books Reviews
I liked Shakespeare courses in college. Many theories on his writings and if he actually was the author of it all.
This is just as it says, a basic informational book about what is known about Shakespeare--useful if a little colorless. It's a good reference volume.
Written initially in 1913 by W.A. Neison, educator and lexicographer, President of Smith College from 1917-39, Professor at Bryn Marw, Harvard and Columbia in Renaissance Literature, and A.H. Thorndike, American educator and specialist in Shakespeare and his works at Columbia, this book went through several revisions (it seems to have been a popular book), until the 1937 printing, which I have.
Chapter 1 "Shakespeare's England and London", says it all in the first sentence, an idea I came away with quite a while ago. "Shakespeare lived in a period of change."
He sure did, and they go on to categorize each area of change. These guys knew what they were talking about and how to write. The book has that cool English way of putting the title of the book on the left hand page top, and a summary of the page contents on the right hand page top.

10. Conclusion
There are four Apprendices. This book should be required reading for any student of Shakespeare and his times. As the book points out, and many people forget, Shakespeare was affected by his environment, times, and circumstances.
1913 Questions of authorship were devoted to Francis Bacon. Question of authorhip were only about 50 years old, not 300. Loney's Toon would not come out for another seven years. The only questions of authorship were if Shakespeare had used collaborats for several of his early plays, and Pericles, and a few narrative poems. Plus the Apocolyptic plays are discussed.
Wonderful book to add to your collection.
NOTE Zero of one found this review helpful and left no comment. Wonder why? Of course, they are one of the nittering nabobs of negativism that don't believe that Shakespeare wrote the plays. They'd rather believe Anderson, Ogburn, and the other non-experts rather than the experts, like the authors of this book.
Their minds are already made up beforehand. But if you want to know more about Shakespeare, his job, his company, fellow playrights, theater, stages, Elizabethan London, etc., this is an excellent book.
