A great read, especially if you were born/raised in Texas, interested in small-town Texas or grew up in the 80s.
Chuck Cox's debut novel, "A Matter of Life and Death in Texas," is a compelling story of life, death, love, and basketball at a small Texas high school.
The book features a rich cast of characters, all of them struggling with returning to school and normal life after a beloved classmate's death. When the deceased girl's boyfriend meets a new transfer student, he gets an offer that seems too good to be true. By the time the narrative rounds the bend and starts running downhill towards the ending, you'll be sprinting through the pages to the conclusion.
Past the book's story of teenage live and loss, the book has a sweet undercurrent of life in a Texas suburb in 1986. Like a love song to a moment and place in time, "Life and Death" takes you right back to that moment, the first days of school and a senior year of high school forever changed by a May car crash. The scenes are set perfectly, the cars, the music, the everyday minutia, all dead solid perfect.
Five stars. Nothing but net. Go Sidewinders.
